Nebraska Society Internship 2003

Internship: Congressman Tom Osborne

My congressional internship has been a great experience. Not only did I learn more about the legislative process than I could have read in any book, I got to work with a great staff and great Congressman. Everyone on the staff went out of their way to teach me and help me when I needed it.

I played the role of a pinch-hitter in the office for much of my time here because of a couple of changes on the staff. This meant that I got a very hands-on experience helping constituents, answering phones, and responding to mail—which turned out to be one of the most interesting parts of the job because it required researching a broad array of constituent concerns. However, the highlight of my time in Washington was to see Secretary of State Colin Powell speak as part of the intern lecture series. John Hansen, the District Director has also graciously offered for me to shadow him for a few days while I’m back in Kearney over the next three weeks, so I will learn even more about the interaction with constituents.

Going forward I plan to continue as a business major in the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where I am entering my sophomore year, and my experience here both with people and the institution will serve me well in my career and life as an involved citizen.
